Albania awards waste-to-energy BOT project

Albanian Public Procurement Agency has announced that the Ministry of Environment has concluded a contract for the construction of waste-to-energy power plant near Fier with privately owned company Integrated Technology Services (ITS).

The ministry selected the company's subsidiary Integrated Technology Waste Treatment Fier (ITWTF) to build, operate and transfer the plant to the government under a six-year concession contract. ITS was the only bidder on the tender.

The plant is located near the city of Fier, in southwest Albania and its cost amounts to ALL3,8 billion (US$29,4 million). It is expected to process a maximum of about 70,000 tonnes/year capacity and a maximum processing of 180,200 tonnes/day, that will provide an electricity output of 3.8 MW

ITS has a 70% stake of ITWTF and Ndertim Montimi Patos (NMP), building materials producer and construction company, the remaining 30%.

The construction of the plant is in line with the strategy and management policies of the Ministry of Environment and the project was initiated by the local government in July 2015.

The inhabitants of villages near the plant have organized several protests against the plant as they consider the project a health hazard.
