Dubai has plans to develop a mega waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in Warsan district two as part of a plan to reduce landfill waste by 75 per cent over the next five years.

The government has not yet decided if it will fund the project directly or if the project will be developed under the public private partnership (PPP) model. The total WTE plant investment is estimated at US$2.1 billion.

The facility phase I would receive 2,000 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste per day to produce 60 megawatts of power. The plant is expected to be operational by 2020.

Additionally the UAE’s Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has pans to launch a tender process to run a facility to handle waste in the Northern Emirates, capable of processing between 1,000 and 1,500 tonnes per day.

According to American research and consultancy company Global Market, the global WTE market size is expected to grow to more than US$33 billion by 2023 from last year’s US$$20.86 billion.
