Gauteng announces government building through PPP

Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (GDID) has announced plans to develop the Kopanong Precinctin PPP project in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD), South Africa.

The new government building will be the Head Office for the Gauteng government departments. The project will include retail streams at the building's ground floor levels.

The total project investment is estimated at R5 billion (US$391.7 million).

The project has already been registered as a PPP with the National Treasury and the appointment of a transaction advisor and the feasibility study are currently underway.

The project is part of several movements to revive Johannesburg CBD. The area is the most dense collection of skyscrapers in Africa, however due to white flight and urban blight, many of the buildings are unoccupied as tenants have left for more secure locations in the Northern Suburbs, in particular Sandtonand Rosebank.
