Hogan Lovells hires Sohail Barkatali to join its Dubai finance practice

Hogan Lovells has recruited Sohail Barkatali to join its Dubai finance practice as a partner in the Infrastructure, Energy, Resources and Projects (IERP) team.

Sohail joins from Chadbourne & Parke in Dubai where he has been a partner since 2008. He specializes in project finance, focusing on power projects in electricity, oil and gas, water, waste-water and infrastructure. He has also advised on privatizations, sector restructuring and regulatory matters.

Sohail regularly advises sponsors, export credit agencies, multilateral agencies, commercial banks and Government entities on projects across the Middle East and Africa. High profile clients he has advised include the Governments of Kuwait, Oman and Kenya, Marubeni, Toyota-Tsusho, JGC, EDF, IFC, Standard Chartered, Meezan Bank and Clifford Capital. He has advised on projects with BNP Paribas, Macquarie and RBS.

Sohail's hire represents significant continued investment in Hogan Lovells IERP practice over the last year following the recruitment of power specialist Joe Kim in Tokyo, Alex Cull in Singapore, Samantha Campbell in Vietnam, Alexander Dolgov in Moscow and Scott Anderson in Denver.

Commenting on Sohail's arrival, Sharon Lewis, global head of Hogan Lovells' finance practice, said:

"The Middle East is one of the most active projects markets in the world and growing our Infrastructure, Energy and Resources Practice is a key priority for us. Sohail's arrival allows us to not only grow our practice on the ground in Dubai but extend our offering to clients in Japan too, where he will be working with recent hire Joe Kim.  His African power credentials will also be invaluable to growing our energy practice in Africa."

Adrian Walker, co-head of the IERP practice, added:

"Sohail's hire is a key part of our continued investment in the IERP practice, adding to our immensely strong global team providing on-the ground, local expertise, which will support our clients in delivering major projects that have a significant positive impact on local economies."

Sohail commented:

"Hogan Lovells provides a global platform in a number of key jurisdictions, particularly for Japanese outbound project finance and development work. I am looking forward to working with the global team to continue to build the Middle East and Africa project finance practice."
