June decision for Swiss road PPP

The Public-Private Partnership Association of Switzerland has recently announced that the Canton of Geneve will vote in a referendum on June 5, 2016 to approve the construction of the Traversée du Lac road project in Geneva, which will be implemented on a PPP mode, after they have confirmed its feasibility.

The crossing will consist of a tunnel or a bridge but the decision has not been taken yet.

This project would help to eliminate congestion in the main transit routes in the city of Geneva, such as the A1 motorway, and to improve traffic flow and accessibility throughout the region. Users could gain not only time, but also comfort, safety and reliability.

According to the Public-Private Partnership Association of Switzerland the construction could be financed entirely by the private sector without credits granted by the authorities and the users would then pay a toll fee for using the project. The Association expects the construction of the Traversée du Lac project to start by 2030.

In June 1988, 68% of Geneva voters agreed in principle to a new lake crossing. However, in June 1996, two-thirds of voters rejected plans to build either a tunnel or a bridge across the lake.

More recently, the project was presented in referendum twice, in 2014 and in 2015, through two different tunnel initiatives but the Geneva voters turned down those initiatives as well.
