National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has awarded the four laning of the Lucknow-Sultanpur section of National Highway - 56 on Hybrid Annuity Mode to Dilip Buildcon.

The road will be developed in build, operate and transfer (BOT - Toll) mode on design, build, finance, operate and transfer (BOT/DBFOT) basis.

The project comprises the construction of a 127 km road in Uttar Pradesh between Lucknow and Sultanpur. It transverses through several districts of the state capital, neihbouring Barabanki, Raebareli and Sultanpur. It includes the construction of, among others, 14 major bridges, 1 Railway Over Bridge, 4 vehicular underpasses and 6 cattle/pedestrian underpasses.

The total project investment is estimated at Rs28.45 billion (US$425 million).

Implementation of the project is expected to help reducing the travel time from Lucknow to holy city of Varanasi and promote tourism in the region. Additionally, it will help the socio-economic condition of the concerned regions of the State and would also increase employment potential for local labourers for project activities.

The PPP road project was approved in late 2014 by the India's Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. At that time, the Cabinet approved two other projects: the four laning of the Nagina-Kashipur section of National Highway - 74 in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh and the four laning of the Singhara-Binjabahal section of National Highway - 6 in Odisha.

This month we have reported about three other transport PPP projects in India:
