The MASS Rapid Transit of Thailand (MRTA) has awarded to the BSR joint venture  the contract to build and operate Bangkok’s Pink and Yellow monorail lines under a PPP concession.

BRS joint venture is formed by of BTS Group, Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction and Ratchaburi Electricity Generating and will hold the concession for a 30-year period.

As we reported in mid November another team presented a bid for the project, a joint venture of Bangkok Expressway and Metro Public Co (BEM) and Ch Karnchang.

The 34.5 km Pink Line will link Khae Rai to Min Buri with 30 stations. The total project investment is estimated at THB53.5 billion (USD$1.51 billion).

Bangkok's 30.4 km MRT Yellow Line will link Lat Phrao with Samrong with 23 stations. The total project investment is estimated at THB51.9 billion (USD$1.46 billion).

These two projects are part of the initial five project plan to stimulate the country's economy and improve its transport system. The three other projects are the following:

  • Operation of Blue Line extension project.
  • Bangpa-in - Nakhon Rachasrima motorway PPP project.
  • Bangyai - Kanchanaburi motorway PPP project.

Thailand's government has a pipeline of 20 infrastructure projects across the country to be delivered under PPP scheme, with an estimated investment totalling THB1.8 trillion (US$50.4 billion). Contracts for all 20 are expected to be awarded by the end of 2017.
