PPP model an option for Belarus road project

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has plans to finance the M-10 highway project in Belarus if it is finally developed under PPP mode.

The project involves the upgrade of the Russian border-Gomel-Kobrin M-10 section.

The EBRD has also announced plans to finance PPP projects in the country to improve water supply and treatment systems. This kind of projects are currently being implemented in Vitebsk, Slonim and Baranovichi.

The press service of the Belarus Economy Ministry reported:

"Suma Chakrabarti (EBRD President) confirmed the Bank's intentions to take part in the project to renovate a section of the M10 highway (Russian border-Gomel-Kobrin) on condition of public-private partnership and to expand its participation in the projects to improve water supply and treatment systems,"

Belarus is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast. Its strongest economic sectors are service industries and manufacturing. The country, which joined the EBRD in 1992, owns 6,002 shares of the bank to the amount of over €60 million. The shares represent a 0.2% of the bank authorized capital. Since 1992 the EBRD has provided over €1,640 million of finance to the country, of which €876 million has been provided during the last four years.
