Preferred bidder for UK hospital programme

South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) has selected a preferred bidder for its £160 million Estate Modernisation Programme (EMP).

Springfield and Tolworth Estate Partnership (STEP), a 50/50 partnership with Kajima Partnerships and Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures, has been chosen to deliver two new hospitals on existing campus sites at Springfield University Hospital (Tooting) and Tolworth Hospital (Surbiton).

The announcement of preferred bidder marks a significant milestone in the development of the EMP, and enables the proposals to be finalized for a full business case to be submitted to Government for approval.

The plans, once formally approved, will bring forward a range of benefits to both our service users and the local community:

  • Two new campuses with 1st class in-patient facilities – delivering the best care for our patients
  • A 32 acre public park – providing excellent outdoor space for our community
  • Extensive community healthcare – treating people closer to their families and their home
  • Brand new homes – providing houses for local families in Tooting
  • A state-of-the-art new school – investing in our children’s future
  • Over £5 million for new transport facilities – boosting transport links for local residents

David Bradley, NHS Chief Executive said:

“We are pleased to have reached this important milestone. The Trust has been developing the plans for two new hospitals for many years and we are delighted, after a robust procurement process, to have selected STEP to work alongside us to develop the more detailed plans as we move forward to delivering the new hospitals our patients desperately need. Our staff work hard every day to deliver the best care but our buildings are old and expensive to run. It is very important to us that we provide patients with the best facilities and services possible and we are pleased to have found a way to do this through raising our own funds. The Estate Modernisation Programme will transform the way we deliver mental health care for generations to come and ensure our patients receive the best care in first class modern facilities.”

STEP, a 50/50 partnership between Kajima Partnerships and Sir Robert McAlpine Capital Ventures, said:

“We are delighted to be working with South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust in delivering its Estate Modernisation Programme.  We are very proud to be part of the Trust’s plans to provide state-of-the-art mental health facilities at the Springfield and Tolworth Hospital sites and look forward to bringing these plans to fruition.”
