The Belgrade Administration (Serbia) has announced that only one bid has been submitted for the Belgrade municipal waste treatment and disposal PPP project.

The bids for project at the Vinca landfill were opened on July 13. The French-Japanese consortium of companies Suez and Itochu was the only one which sent a proposal.

As we reported in October, 2015, a total of eleven teams had plans to bid for the project.

The project involves the implementation of a new waste management system, construction of waste treatment facility and a waste recycling line, development of a system for production of energy out of waste, and maintenance and environmental regeneration of Vinca landfill.

The project will be developed on a design, build, finance operation and transfer (DBFOT) basis and is expected to need a total investment of €250 million (US$283.6 million).

The new facilities will be designed to cater for the municipal waste generated in 14 municipalities of Belgrade, for a total of about 600,000t of waste per year. The overarching objective of the city is to bring Belgrade's waste disposal practices into accordance with the effective Republic of Serbia regulation,  in line with EU regulation, and within the context of the country's EU accession negotiations.

Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. The city has a population of 1.23 million, while over 1.65 million people live in its metro area, which encompasses administrative limits of City of Belgrade.
