TfGM

Company description

Transport for Greater Manchester—often abbreviated TfGM—is the public transport authority responsible for planning, coordinating, and delivering transport within the Greater Manchester city-region in North West England. As an executive arm of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), TfGM advances the strategic vision set by local government and the Mayor.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

  • Public Transit Oversight: TfGM owns and oversees the Metrolink light rail system, manages bus franchising, and works toward integration with commuter rail lines under its Bee Network initiative.

  • Bee Network Implementation: TfGM is rolling out Greater Manchester’s unified transport system—integrating buses, trams, cycling, walking, and ultimately rail—with consistent livery, contactless fares and capped prices.

  • Active Travel & Cycling Infrastructure: TfGM is expanding networks for walking and cycling, including Bike Hire schemes and dedicated walking/cycling corridors called “Busy Beeways” and “Beeways”.

  • Fare & Ticketing System: They've introduced a contactless “Tap and Go” fare system citywide, and are preparing the Bee Card smartcard—Greater Manchester’s equivalent to London’s Oyster card
