Bulgaria's Minister of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications, Ivaylo Moskovski, has announced plans to launch a tender process for the Sofia airport concession.
According to the Minister, they expect to receive a proposal for a private investor soon. Details about the investor have not been disclosed.
Sofia Airport is Bulgaria's main airport. It is located 5 km east from the center of Sofia. In 2014, the airport handled 3,815,158 passengers, an 8.9% increase compared to 3,504,326 handled in 2013. Bulgaria also uses Sofia Airport for the Vrazhdebna Air Force Base.
In recent years, a second terminal was built to the east of the first terminal (opened in December 2006) and a second runway was constructed alongside the existing one (opened in August 2006). The old runway has been turned into a taxiway parallel to the newly constructed runway.
The new control tower was officially inaugurated on December 5th, 2012. It is situated to the west of Terminal 2 and is complementing the terminal building in architectural terms.
