First Tracks laid for multibillion Metro Project in Australia

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project has achieved a significant milestone with the commencement of track laying at Luddenham, marking the first kilometre of tracks installed for this transformative infrastructure initiative.

This development is part of the 23 km metro line that will connect St Marys to the new Western Sydney International Airport and the emerging city of Bradfield. The project is being delivered by the Parklife Metro Consortium, led by Webuild in partnership with Clough, under the SSTOM (Stations, Systems, Trains, Operations, and Maintenance) package. Track laying began at Luddenham, just north of a new rail bridge over the future M12 motorway, and is progressing northward toward St Marys. A team of up to 60 workers installs between 70 to 100 metres of track daily. The project will utilize over 6,400 tonnes of Australian-made rail steel, resulting in 106.8 km of rail line and 76,285 sleepers, including installations at the stabling and maintenance facility at Orchard Hills. 

Webuild holds a 78% stake in the construction consortium and a 10% stake in the operating company. The project encompasses the construction of six stations and is notable for being Australia's first fully carbon-neutral infrastructure project. The line is expected to be operational by mid-2027, aligning with the anticipated opening of the Western Sydney International Airport. Once completed, the metro will provide a 15-minute connection between the airport and St Marys, integrating with the broader Sydney Metro network and significantly enhancing transportation options for Greater Western Sydney.
