Green light for Brighton uni campus development

Planning approval has been given for plans to deliver new student facilities at the University of Brighton as well as new housing, retail and business premises.

As we reported in December, the University launched the tender process to seek a private partner for the Moulsecoomb campus, located adjacent to Mithras House on Lewes Road. The project involves 800 student bedrooms in new halls of residence, new Students' Union facilities and multi-storey car park.

The multi-million pound campus development forms part of a wider masterplan for the Preston Barracks site that will also include 369 new homes, including affordable housing, a new business start-up hub and retail and food outlets.

It is expected that the development, which is being delivered by the University of Brighton in partnership with developers U+I and Brighton & Hove City Council, will create over 1,500 jobs and attract over £500 million (US$662 million) into the city over the next ten years.

Work is expected to start in October with full completion by August 2021.

Professor Debra Humphris, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Brighton said:

“We are delighted that our plans have been approved. This partnership aims to deliver one of the most ambitious and transformational projects for the city in a neighbourhood where meaningful regeneration is long overdue. The scheme has the potential to have a huge positive impact both for the local community and wider city, as we look to deliver on our aspiration to create an inspiring place where people can live, work and learn together.”
