Kandla Port signs concession agreement with operator

Kandla Port Trust (KPT) and Kandla International Container Terminal Ltd. (KICTL) have signed the concession agreement for the Kandla Port container terminal berth 11 & 12 project in India.

KICTL is a SPV created by International Cargo Terminals and Infrastructure Ltd (formerly United Liner Agencies), a subsidiary of JM Baxi’s group.

The project, which will be developed under the public private partnership (PPP) model on build, operation and transfer (BOT) basis, entails the design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of the container terminal berth 11 & 12 at Kandla Port during a 30 year concession period.

The total project investment is estimated at Rs1.598 billion (US$23.7 million) and it is expected to be build during a 12 month construction period.

International Cargo Terminals will share 10.44% of its total revenue with KPT. 

The new facilities comprises a draft of 13m where vessels of size 65000-75000 DWT can be handled. The berth will have a length of 545 m and an annual capacity of 600,000 TEUs and the terminal will have a backup area of 18.74 ha and 3 ha at the berths.

Kandla Port is a seaport in Kutch District of Gujarat state in western India, near the city of Gandhidham. Located on the Gulf of Kutch on the northwestern coast of India some 256 nautical miles southeast of the Port of Karachi in Pakistan and over 430 nautical miles north-northwest of the Port of Mumbai (Bombay). It is the largest port of India by volume of cargo handled.

JM Baxi is currently operating a container terminal at Vishakhapatnam port and developing another multipurpose cargo berth to handle containers and clean cargo at Paradip Port on PPP basis. They have also been given the operations and maintenance contract of container terminal at Haldia Dock Complex.
