TxDOT Chooses Kiewit for SH-83 highway P3

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has awarded the SH-183  Managed Lanes toll concession in Texas to the consortium SouthGate Mobility Partners.

The consortium is formed by Kiewit Development Company and Kiewit Infrastructure South Company.

The team beat out competition from three other consortia that bid for the project:

The project involves the reconstruction of an approximately 9.3-mile section of SH 183 from SH 161 to Interstate Highway (IH) 35E/Trinity Parkway in Dallas County.

This project will be built in phases. The interim phase of construction, estimated at $850 million, includes rehabilitation and replacement of deteriorating roadways and adding one managed toll lane in each direction. The Developer will provide 25 years of operations and maintenance.

The toll road project is divided into multiple segments summarized below:

  • Middle Segment (5.6 miles, from SH 161 to West of Loop 12);
  • Diamond Interchange Managed Lanes Segment (1.7 miles, from West of Loop 12 to West of Grauwyler);
  • East Segment (1.4 miles, from West of Grauwyler to Empire Central); and
  • IH 35E Tie-In Segment (0.6 miles, from Empire Central to IH 35E/Trinity Parkway).

Construction is slated to begin on the interim phase at the end of 2014 with improvements completed by 2018.

The ultimate phase will include an additional general purpose lane in each direction, up to three managed toll lanes in each direction and the completion of the Diamond Interchange at Loop 12/SH 183/Spur 482/SH 114.

The press release from TxDOT said that funding for the ultimate project has not been identified.
