Operation begins for the first phase of USD1.24 billion Light rail line PPP project in Egypt

The Ministry for Transport in Egypt has announced that the operation of the first phase of the 10th of Ramadan Light Rail Transit (LRT) line has started. The 70 Km long LRT line connects the east of Cairo with its neighboring cities and districts including El-Salam City, 10th of Ramadan City, El-Obour City, Badr City and El-Shorouk City.

The first phase consists of 12 stations served by 22 LRVs, with a capacity for up to 360,000 passengers daily. Once all phases are completed, the LRT project includes 16 stations with a capacity for up to 500,000 passengers a day. China Railway Engineering and AVIC International were responsible for the construction of the project.

In August 2021, Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) signed a contract with RATP Dev to operate the line for 15 years.
