Preferred bidder selected for USD1.6 billion Road PPP contract in UK

National Highways in the United Kingdom (UK) has announced MORE JV consortium as the preferred bidder for the contract, which includes the tunnel and main construction work for the A303 Amesbury to Berwick Down scheme past Stonehenge.

The Joint Venture is formed by Webuild (42.5% share), FCC Construcción, and BeMo Tunnelling along with Atkins, Jacobs and Sener as designers. The Main Works Contract has an estimated value of EUR1.5 billion (US$1.60 billion) and covers the construction of civil, structural, mechanical, electrical and technology components of the tunnel as well as the roadworks and structures and the environmental components, which will be used during the 5-year construction phase.

The proposed upgrade of the A303 between Amesbury and Berwick Down includes:

  • 8 miles (approximately 13 kilometers) of the dual carriageway;
  • a tunnel at least 2 miles (3.3 kilometers) long underneath the World Heritage Site, closely following the existing A303 route, but a further 50 meters away from the Stonehenge monument;
  • a new bypass to the north of the village of Winterbourne Stoke;
  • junctions with the A345 and A360 on either side of the World Heritage Site.
