USD284m rail project in Peru to be awarded in December

Peru's private investment agency, ProInversión, is set to award the 30-year concession contract for the rehabilitation of the Huancayo-Huancavelica railway in December 2019.

The railway also called "Tren Macho", covers the 128 Km Huancayo - Huancavelica route, re-started operations in December 2011, after being out of service for five years. This PPP project involves the upgrade and modernization of the mentioned rail line. The preferred bidder will be responsible for the design, upgrade, finance, operation and maintenance of the line during the 30 year concession period. It will be also responsible for the provision of the rolling stock, among others.

The US$284 million project involves the development of the railway infrastructure and rolling stock (trains and locomotives). The line will pass through the towns of Huancayo, Huancán, Huayucachi, Viques and Cullhuas (Junín); and those of Ñahuimpuquio, Mariscal Cáceres, Izcuchaca, Pilchaca, Cuenca, Acoria, Yauli and Huancavelica (Huancavelica). The maximum speed will be 96 kilometers per hour for passengers and 64 for cargo transportation. The works will be operated in two stages: Huancayo-Mariscal Cáceres and Mariscal Cáceres-Huancavelica.

Besides improving 128 km of railroad the private partner will perform changing of 15 bridges, modernization of the 7 stations, construction of a workshop yard, auxiliary areas, signaling systems, communications and telecommunications.

The project will have five trains and two locomotives that will take a tour exclusively for passengers seven days a week in a total of five daily circulations while six times a week for passengers and merchandise on a daily circulation per direction. It is estimated that the improved transport facility will benefit up to 250,000 passengers.

The Huancayo - Huancavelica railway is one of the highest-altitude railways in the world, between 2,819 meters above sea level, at the Mariscal Cáceres Station and 3,680 meters above its highest point, at the Huancavelica Station. It has a total of seven (7) stations, fifteen (15) bridges, thirty-eight (38) tunnels, thirty-seven (37) level crossings.
