Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has signed a 30-year water purchaser agreement with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power for phase 1 of the Hassyan seawater desalination project using solar power in Dubai, UAE.

In August 2023, DEWA selected ACWA Power as the 'Preferred Bidder' for the Hassyan Phase 1 Independent Water Producer (IWP) project, involving the construction and operation of the Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) facility producing 180 Million Imperial Gallons per Day (MIGD) at an investment of AED 3.357 billion (USD 914 million). The project, spanning 252,300 sq m, utilizes solar energy, marking DEWA's inaugural Independent Water Producer (IWP) venture. Dubai's desalination capacity, currently at 490 MIGD, will rise to 670 MIGD by 2026 upon project completion. The project is part of DEWA’s efforts to increase its water desalination capacity to 730 MIGD by 2030, from 490 MIGD at present.
