Rail Baltica has announced the completion of another spatial planning stage of the railway under the Rail Baltica Global Project, which specifies through which territories will the Kaunas-Vilnius section pass. The route would run from Vilnius via Paneriai, Lentvaris, north of Vevis, north of Kaišiadorys and will end in Kaunas, Lithuania next to the existing 1,520 km gauge railway. 

The length of the railway in the section Kaunas-Vilnius will be 95 km and the total length with additional connections will be 156 km, the travel time without stops will be 38 minutes. The plan provides for regional connections with Vevis and Kaišiadorys stations, Vilnius intermodal terminal, Vilnius and Kaunas airports.

Sweco Lietuva UAB and DB Engineering & Consulting GmbH are the organizers of the plan for the development of the engineering infrastructure of the Kaunas-Vilnius railway line. 

The Rail Baltica Global project involves the development of an electrified double-track European gauge railway line along the entire Rail Baltica route, connecting Warsaw, Kaunas, Riga, and Tallinn. The total length of the Rail Baltica railway line in the Baltic States will reach 870 km, with 392 km in Lithuania, 265 km in Latvia and 213 km in Estonia.
