Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure in Canada has approved the business case for the George Massey Tunnel Replacement project. According to the plan, a new eight-lane immersed-tube tunnel will be constructed on Highway 99 in British Colombia to replace the old tunnel crossing of Fraser River. Two of the eight lanes will be dedicated to bus rapid transit, and there will be separated pathways for cyclists and pedestrians.

Two options were considered in the business case– an eight-lane tunnel and an eight-lane bridge. After careful consideration, the plan with the tunnel was chosen. The new tunnel will provide a toll-free crossing that aligns with regional interests and improves transit, cycling, and walking connections across the Fraser River.

The new tunnel is expected to be operational by 2030, with the cost estimated at CAD4.15 billion (US$3.92 billion). The authority will conduct an environmental assessment process, including ongoing engagement with Indigenous people and preparing for procurement.
