Contract awarded for USD1.04 billion Highway PPP project in Romania

Compagnia Nationala de Administrare a Infrastructurii Rutiere (CNAIR) in Romania has awarded a concession contract for Lot 3 of the Sibiu Pitesti highway to JV of WeBuild and Tancrad. WeBuild has a 90% stake in the concession while Tancrad has a 10% stake. The 122 kilometers long highway connecting Sibiu to Pitesti is divided into five lots. The highway connects central and western Romania to Europe’s highway network as part of the Rhine-Danube Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network.

Lot 3 will cross the Carpathian Mountains between Cornetu and Tigveni for 37.4 kilometers, of which 12.5 kilometers will include bridges and viaducts, and a 1.7-kilometer-long twin tunnel. It also includes the design and construction of more than 23 kilometers of a double-lane highway, two interchanges at Valeni and Cornetu, 18 kilometers of consolidation works, and the construction of a maintenance and control center.

The estimated investment value of the concession is EUR1 billion (USD1.04 billion). Apart from private investments, the contract will be 85% financed by European Union funds and the remaining 15% by state funds.
