International architecture practice 10 Design has won the competition to design a major 74,000 sq m school project within Qianjiang New City of Hangzhou, China.

The school's "grassland village" concept departs from the traditional layout of a single institutional building for primary education. The master plan includes 48 teaching units and specialized facilities for science, art, PE, IT, and performance art. 3 teaching blocks, organized by grade level, are strategically positioned in the southeast away from the motorway, promoting communication and collective learning among students of similar ages. Shared facilities, such as the library, canteen, and activity rooms, are located below the green deck along an east-west main street, creating a central public space within the campus. The plan also features an 800-seat performance theatre in the northwest corner, to be shared with the local community. An earthy color palette and natural textures adorn the façade, symbolizing a safe and healthy campus integrated with nature.

The development prioritizes maximizing daylight, natural ventilation, and green spaces, evident in the classroom design and orientation. This innovative educational hub caters to 2,000 elementary school students, serving as an accessible and child-friendly public space for the community.
