The Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (APMRCL) awarded the contract to SYSTRA as the general consultant for the upcoming metro system in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), India.
SYSTRA will manage the full project lifecycle, covering:
Planning and design coordination
Tendering and contract management
Construction supervision and project commissioning
Construction is set to start in October 2025. A standout feature of the project will be Asia’s longest bi-level viaduct, designed to maximize urban space efficiency and minimize disruption to residents. The viaduct reflects the authorities’ commitment to innovative, space-saving infrastructure solutions while ensuring efficient use of limited urban land.
The first phase of the Visakhapatnam metro will consist of three strategic lines, before expanding in the second phase to the future Bhogapuram International Airport. With this ambitious project, the authorities aim to transform the region into a key financial and technological hub in India, while modernising urban mobility and reducing road congestion through a modern transport network.
STRABAG and Equitix, together with the project partner GLIL Infrastructure, confirmed that they have reached financial close and have officially been awarded the contract for the Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP).
