Federal government and government of Quebec in Canada have announced an investment of CAD 500 million (US$ 376.80 million) in La Fontaine Tunnel rehabilitation project. The Tunnel is a strategic road link for passenger and freight transportation for the metropolitan region, Québec, and Canada. The Tunnel is an integral part of autoroute 25 and links the eastern side of the Island of Montréal and Longueuil through ïle Charron in Boucherville. It is the longest submerged tunnel in Canada. The rehabilitation works includes installation of new pavement, lighting, signage and a fire protection system.

With this investment, the government is expecting to prolong the life span of the tunnel by 40 years. Along with tunnel rehabilitation, the works will also include renovations to the section of Highway 25 between Charron Island and the Sherbrooke Interchange as well as the construction of public transit infrastructure along the axis of Highways 25 and 20. The total cost of the project will be known after the completion of the tendering process for the project.

Currently, about 120,000 vehicles use the tunnel per day, 13 percent of which are heavy vehicles like trucks.

The works on the project are expected to start in the second quarter of 2020 and last until 2024.
