Government of Ethiopia to launch energy and road PPP projects

The Government of Ethiopia through its Office of the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) will launch the US$7 billion renewable energy and road development projects by July 2019. 

The private company partners will finance, construct, operate and maintain the projects, and generate revenues from the operation of the assets. 

The US$1.1 billion highway project composed of road development from Adama to Awash (125km), Awash to Mieso (72km) and Mieso to Dire Dawa (160km).

The 14 renewable energy projects include a mix of hydropower and solar schemes. The hydropower facilities include the US$1.2bn 424 MW Halele Warabessa project; the US$984 million 798 MW Dabus project; the US$793 million 469 MW Genale Dawa 5 project; and US$729 million 280 MW Chemoga Yeda 1 and 2 projects.

The solar scheme involves the development of eight photovoltaic (PV) facilities in Ethiopia. Each of the projects to be developed in Welenchiti, Weranso, Mekele, Metema, Hurso, and Metehara, among others, will have a generating capacity of 100 MW-150 MW
