US construction company Granite Construction expressed its intention to move away from Public-Private Partnership (PPP/P3s) projects which are seen to have contributed in the US$97.8 million company loss for the second quarter of 2019.

Aside from the decline of the delivery of the big-ticket projects due to weather delays and construction-related problems, the company noted an untenable imbalance in risk-sharing between Granite and the project owners with the fixed-price design-build contract delivery model and the public-private partnership contract-delivery model. The company would not disclose the projects but said those are four projects that have been in the company´s pipeline since between 2012 and 2014 and each range from USD 1 billion to USD 4 billion. Three of the projects are 90% complete. Granite Construction is currently in disputes with the owners of the projects.

Granite Construction plans to focus on the shift to other alternative project delivery methods such as negotiated work, construction manager general contractor, construction manager at risk and progressive design-build that have begun two years ago. Although the company has recently announced a contract with the California Department of Transportation, it will continue its plan to move away from future PPP/P3 engagements.
