Members of the City Council have agreed to support a resolution favoring the construction of a US$16 million affordable senior housing project in central Joplin, Missouri, Texas, USA.

The project, called Delaware Commons, will consist of 54 one- and two-bedroom apartments. The apartments will be available to seniors 55 and older with incomes at or below 60% of the area median income. The project is being developed by Kevin Parker, a local developer who has built several other affordable housing projects in Joplin. There is a shortage of affordable housing options for seniors in Joplin. Many seniors are struggling to afford their rent or mortgage, and this is making it difficult for them to stay in their homes. Delaware Commons will provide a safe and affordable place for seniors to live. The project is expected to be completed in early 2024. Once completed, Delaware Commons will be the first new affordable senior housing project to be built in Joplin in over 20 years.

The project is being funded through a combination of public and private financing. The Missouri Housing Development Commission (MHDC) is providing a US$3.5 million loan for the project, and the City of Joplin is providing a US$500,000 grant. Parker is also providing some of the funding for the project. The Delaware Commons affordable senior housing project is a welcome addition to Joplin's housing landscape. The project will provide much-needed affordable housing options for seniors in the city.
