Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has stated that Lamu port is expected to start operation by June 2021. Lamu port involves the construction of 32 berths on a 10 km shoreline with an investment of US$ 3 billion. China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) is responsible for the construction of three berths out of thirty-two. The three berths were built at a cost of US$ 370 million. CCCC completed the construction of the first berth in August 2019. KPA is seeking investors for the remaining berths of the port.
The port is part of Lamu Port South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) program, which involves seaport, railway lines, road network, oil and fibre-optic lines, airports, and other facilities. The total investment value for LAPSSET is US$ 24 billion. The road works for the LAPSSET project are underway.
