Myanmar port authority has announced that the construction of the first deep seaport will take place. The exact location is yet to be finalized, but it is expected it will be decided by the next year. The project is a part of the National Transport Master Plan and is the second priority in the plan. The analysis is necessary to estimate the cost and implementation methods of the project.

After the analysis, the government will be able to decide whether the project will be implemented through a public-private partnership model or through a loan.

In addition to deep seaport the authority is planning to construct six inland ports in Bhamo (Bamaw), Upper Myanmar in Mandalay, Pakokku and Magway, and Monywa on Chindwin River.

Myanmar port authority estimates that Yangon port will have to handle four million TEU units in 2025, and seven million in 2030. The existing port can handle four million TEU units, thus a deep seaport is a must requirement to be able to meet future demand. Transport infrastructure is a critical factor for the location. Possible locations for the port are Dawei in Tanintharyi Region, Pathein in Ayeyarwaddy, Kyaukphyu in Rakhine and Mawlamyine in Mon State.
