The project developer of the Machilipatnam port, Navayuga Group, has commenced the construction of the facility in the State of Andhra Pradesh in India.

The INR15.9 billion (US222.72 million) was awarded to Navayuga in 2010 on a BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) mode under the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) method. The delayed start to construction is due to issues with land acquisition.

The facility will be built on 5,000 acres of land. The first phase of the port will comprise four berths with operations spread over 1,692 acres of land on the coast. It is expected to accommodate up to 79.9 MTPA of various cargo and 20 MTPA of container cargo by 2022. The second phase will consist of 15 more berths will be developed on 3,400 acres of land.

The Government of Andhra Pradesh is set to revive the port after it was destroyed by a giant cyclonic storm in 1864. The facility will serve as a container hub on the east coast reducing the time of voyage to Southeast Asian and Asia-Pacific regions.
