Planning process launched for Ecuadorian train network PPP project

The Ministry of Transport and Public Works in Ecuador has announced planning process for the nationwide redevelopment of railway line network.

The authority is preparing delegation progress for repowering and rehabilitation of the railway system for the transport of tourists, people and cargo. In the first phase, a private partner will be selected to sign a partial deed that involves works on 965.6 km of railway tracks. The concession also includes provision of 81 units of tractive and towed equipment as well as surrounding movable and immovable property of approximately 95 stations.

The new railway system will comply to modern standards and use electric traction systems. The structuring process of delegation is expected to be completed in 12 months followed by public tendering and contracting within 10 months. The authority is now conducting viability analysis for selected sections.
