The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) has submitted a redevelopment plan for its Bankside House site, aiming to deliver 1,944 new student beds in central London, UK. In partnership with Equitix and Bouygues UK, the scheme proposes replacing the current building with three towers (24–28 storeys) connected by pavilions and landscaped courtyards.
The development is intended to strengthen LSE’s student housing offer, with all rooms set at below-market rents and 15% designated as affordable, supporting the university’s goal of guaranteeing accommodation for all first-year students by 2030.
Designed by Carmody Groarke and Sheppard Robson, the project prioritises sustainability and wellbeing, targeting BREEAM Excellent and Passivhaus standards with a fully electric, low-carbon energy system. The pavilions at ground level will provide public and social spaces, enhancing links with the local community.
If approved in 2026, demolition is scheduled for 2027, with the new Bankside House opening by September 2032. The project is seen as a landmark opportunity to deliver modern, affordable student living while strengthening LSE’s connection to the Bankside and South Bank areas.
