Privatization of Adelaide public transportation systems

The government of South Australia has announced its plans to privatize the operations of Adelaide's metro trains and trams. The Government will release tenders for the privatization process. In this transaction the ownership of all rail asset will not be transferred to the operator, ownership rights of trains, trams, track, stations and other infrastructure will be retained by the government. And the government will decide the base fare price of the services.

Adelaide is the only capital city in Australia which has public tram system. According to studies done by transport department of Australia Adelaide's public network, systems are underperforming, and new privatization model will improve services. The Government is also planning to integrate the train, trams and bus services in the city. 

As per the survey done by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure Tram patronage was up 7 percent between 2015-16 and 2017-18, while train passenger numbers increased by 3 percent. A State Government survey about Adelaide's transport network stated that only half of the passengers believed that they were getting good value for money, 56 percent of train and tram users and 54 percent of bus passengers thought the service was good value.

Adelaide metro train, tram and public transportation services serve 63 million passengers annually, with a daily ridership of 173,000 people. Metro train network in Adelaide has 6 lines and covers a distance of 131 kilometers.
