Serbia announces progress for Clean Serbia project

The Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia has announced progress on the Clean Serbia utility infrastructure project that was launched in August 2021.

The Ministry signed an agreement with China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and local municipalities for the construction of 14 wastewater plants with an estimated investment value of EUR3.2 billion (US$3.34 billion). The Clean Serbia project involves the development of wastewater treatment plants, sewage networks and pumping stations across 73 locations in 65 municipalities. It also includes the rehabilitation and development of regional landfills at 6 locations. 

In the first phase, water and wastewater-related infrastructure will be developed at the municipalities of Varvarin, Knić, Banja Vrujci, Krupanj, Mionica, Vranje, Novi Bečej, Kragujevac and Novi Sad. Moreover, the works are already under progress in the following municipalities:

  • Svrljig – Wastewater treatment plant with 6.4 km of sewage network at an investment of EUR4.5 million (US$4.69 million);
  • Kladovo – Two wastewater treatment plants with 40.6 km of sewage network at an investment of EUR41 million (US$4.69 million);
  • Lajkovac –  Two wastewater treatment plants at Lajkovac and Bogovada with 30 km of sewage network at an investment of EUR15.5 million (US$16.18 million);
  • Lazarevac – Wastewater treatment plant with 25 km of sewage network at Lazarevac and wastewater treatment plant in Veliki Crljeni with 52.5 km of the sewage network at an investment of EUR48 million (US$50.11 million);
  • Obrenovac – Two wastewater treatment plants at Obrenovac and Ratari with 98 km of sewage network at an investment of EUR54 million (US$56.38 million).

Under the contract terms, CRBC will be required to contract at least 49% of the development works to Serbian subcontractors.
