Webuild Group, through its U.S. subsidiary Lane Construction, has partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to deliver the “Moving I-4 Forward – Project 2” highway expansion in Central Florida.

Under a US$582-million agreement, Webuild Group, through its subsidiary Lane Construction, will design and construct a vital section of a larger program to upgrade Interstate 4. The project will enhance a busy corridor that runs near some of the world’s most popular theme parks and fast-growing communities, helping accommodate high volumes of tourism and commercial activity. Awarded by the Florida Department of Transportation, the contract includes the improvement and widening of roughly 5 km (3.1 miles) of I-4, targeting congestion at a major interchange where the highway connects with State Road 429.

The scope of work to be carried out by Lane Construction is designed to ease traffic movement, enhance living conditions for surrounding communities, and strengthen evacuation capabilities during emergencies. The upgraded roadway will feature four general-purpose lanes and two express lanes in each direction, complemented by direct connectors that simplify traffic flow and eliminate complex merging between Interstate 4 and State Road 429. A particularly sensitive aspect of the project involves expanding Old Lake Wilson Road, which will be upgraded from a basic link into a more community-friendly corridor with dedicated sidewalks and bicycle lanes. In addition, the median of I-4 will be configured to allow for the possible development of a future rail line. The project forms part of the “Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative” led by the FDOT. It includes adding two express lanes in each direction along Interstate 4 between Polk and Orange counties, a critical improvement aimed at enhancing traffic efficiency across central Florida.

The fast-tracked timeline will enable the infrastructure to open well ahead of its initial schedule. Beyond significantly reducing congestion and travel times, the project is expected to improve safety and connectivity, contributing to a more robust, seamlessly integrated transportation system. Lane Construction has a long-established presence in Florida, having operated in the state for several decades. The company is currently managing 11 ongoing projects and maintains a strong footprint along Interstate 4, with four active construction sites within an 80-km (50-mile) radius of the new segment. This extensive local experience offers clear advantages, including in-depth familiarity with traffic conditions, a reliable network of suppliers and partners, proven logistics planning, and a workforce already accustomed to working on similar infrastructure.
