The West Lothian Council has approved the increase of capacity to 750,000 tonnes of Levenseat Waste Management Facility Project in Forth by Lanark in Scotland, UK.

The project would involve a 12.3 MWe energy-from-waste (EfW) plant and an adjacent Materials Recycling Facility (MRF). The facility will consist of combined fluidized bed gasification technology with Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) processed from the MRF.

Of the 750,000 tonnes, about 500,000 will be directed to Levenseat’s thermal treatment plant. The 35,000 tonnes of waste will be sent to landfill while the remaining waste would be recycled or used in processes like composting. Even though the overall tonnage will rise, Levenseat says that the amount of waste sent to landfill will be half as much, due to the waste improved processes on the site, such as thermal treatment plant.

Phase one of the waste treatment facility nears completion of commissioning.

The project is expected to reach financial close by 2021 with the start of the commercial operation by 2023.
