Chile seeks interest for airport concessions program

Chile's Ministry of Public Works (MOP) has launched a request for qualification of interest for the second airport concession program.

The second airport concession program will include, among others, the following airport projects:

  • Carriel Sur International Airport. It s located in Concepción, in the Bío Bío Region, approximately 500 km southwest of Santiago. It is the second largest airport in Chile and serves domestic traffic for LAN Airlines and Sky Airline. Due to its close proximity to Arturo Merino Benitez it also serves as a primary alternate airport for it, usually receiving international traffic from Santiago as the airport closes due to weather.
  • Diego Aracena International Airport. Airport located in Iquique, the capital city of the Tarapacá Region. The airport is located 48 km south of the city. It shares a runway with Los Cóndores Air Base (Base Aérea Los Cóndores), home to the First Air Brigade of the Chilean Air Force (Fuerza Aérea de Chile).
  • El Tepual de Puerto Montt Airport. Located at the center of Northern Patagonia and near the Archaeological site of Monte Verde it  is a commercial and private aviation facility which serves the tourist area of Puerto Montt. A new terminal was inaugurated in February 2010.
  • Carlos Ibañez del Campo de Punta Arenas Airport. It is an airport serving the city of Punta Arenas in southern Chile in the Patagonia region. Due to the high amounts of tourism, it handles a large number of passengers per year. The airport is shared with the Chilean Air Force. Commercial facilities include: paid parking area, cargo facility, and a 3-gate passenger terminal.

We have recently reported that Grupo Nuevo Pudahuel started operating the Santiago's international airport. In February 2015, MOP awarded the concession contract to expand and operate Santiago's international airport to the Grupo Nuevo Pudahuel consortium, comprising Vinci Aeroports S.A.S., Aeroports de Paris S.A. and Astaldi.
