The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and the Peruvian Railway Concessionaire SA (COFEPERU) have signed a concession contract for the modernization of the emblematic Huancayo – Huancavelica Railway, known as the “Tren Macho" in Peru.
The project, which will require a total investment of US$565 million, includes US$445 million for modernization works and US$120 million for operation and maintenance during the first 10 years. It covers the design, financing, execution, acquisition of new rolling stock, and operation and maintenance of the railway along its 128.2 km.
Highlights include the construction of a new maintenance workshop, drainage and slope protection systems, a complete renovation of the railway superstructure, and the addition of a modern signaling and communications system. In addition, seven stations and 20 bus stops will be renovated, including key points such as Chilca, Manuel Tellería, Izcuchaca, Mariscal Cáceres, Acoria, Yauli, and Huancavelica.
This major project will be executed under a co-financed Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement, with a 30-year concession contract: five years for design and construction, and 25 years for operation and maintenance.
