Bidders prequalified for Independent Power projects in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has prequalified 21 companies to participate in the development of four Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS)-ready Independent Power Plant (IPP) projects with a total capacity of 7,200 MW in Saudi Arabia.

The Taiba 1, Taiba 2, Qassim 1 and Qassim 2 IPPs are expected to be gas-fueled combined cycle power plants of 1,800 MW capacity each. The prequalification list was released on 31 January 2023. The 18 companies that have prequalified as Financial and Technical Members are as follows:

  • Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA);

  • Kahrabel FZE - Engie;

  • EDF;

  • General Electric Company;

  • International Company for Water and Power Projects (ACWA Power);

  • JERA Co;

  • Korea Electric Power Corporation;

  • Marubeni Corporation;

  • Nebras Power;

  • The Kansai Electric Power Co Inc.;

  • Saudi Electricity Company;

  • Power and Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (Marafiq);

  • Samsung C&T Corporation;

  • Sumitomo;

  • NTPC;

  • China Power International Holding Ltd + Ajlan Brothers;

  • Al Jomaih Energy & Water Co. (AEW) + EDRA Power Holdings;

  • Sojitz Corporation.

Alfanar Company and Gulf Investment Corporation are pre-qualified as financial members and Orascom Construction is a technical member. 

The projects will open up opportunities for implementing CCS or other potential GHG abatement solutions, allow more active involvement of developers, design contractors and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and drive further local content and value-added to the Saudi Arabia.
