The municipality of Vila Velha in Brazil is planning to launch the concession for public lighting in Vila Velha (ES), modeled after the technical support provided by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). With the new lighting system, 490 thousand people will benefit from higher quality service, with LED technology and remote management, which will reduce energy consumption with public lighting by about 50%. The concessionaire's investments in the project are estimated at more than BRL 110 million (US$ 22.15 million) over the contract period.

The concession aims to delegate the services of modernization, efficiency, expansion, operation, and maintenance of the infrastructure of the municipal network for a period of 20 years. The future concessionaire should implement, within a maximum period of one and a half years, a system that meets the efficiency and performance requirements set out in the PPP notice throughout the city, in addition to prominent lighting in specific points such as squares, parks, and monuments. The private partner will also make improvements, such as the installation of remote monitoring technology for lighting fixtures (remote management) on the main roads, paving the way for services related to the concept of “smart cities” to be offered to residents. With the service concession, direct positive impacts on the population's perception of safety and quality of life are expected.
