The government of Victoria has published concept designs of Melbourne Airport Rail, including key locations along its route, such as the new rail bridge over the Maribyrnong River and elevated twin tracks between Sunshine and the Albion Junction. At 50 meters high, the new bridge will be the second-highest bridge in Melbourne and span 550 meters. It will be built alongside the existing heritage-listed rail bridge over the Maribyrnong River.

Airport trains will travel on new elevated twin tracks across a distance of fewer than 2 kilometers between Sunshine and the Albion Junction, before descending and continuing at ground level through Sunshine and Airport West towards the airport. The solution is expected to avoid costly and disruptive impacts on several major roads, with Sunshine becoming a key station for airport services and other regional and metro lines.

Construction of the project is set to start in 2022, with early works expected such as relocating utilities. The project has a target opening date of 2029, subject to planning, environmental and other government approvals.
