The Catalonia Regional Government’s Territory Department has awarded a EUR300 million (US$334 million) contract to Ferrovial, in consortium with Sacyr, Copisa and Copcisa, to extend the Llobregat-Anoia line of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) commuter rail system in Barcelona, Spain.

The project involves the construction of a 4 km tunnel and 3 new stations, as well as the upgrade of 2 existing stations. The new section of the line will be connected via a twin-track tunnel built with a tunnel boring machine. 2 emergency exits will also be built at specific intersections. Three new stations are planned for the extension: Hospital Clínic, Francesc Macià, and Gràcia, while Gràcia and Plaça Espanya stations will be upgraded. Plaça Espanya station is an important transit interchange where multiple FGC lines and Barcelona Metro lines 1 and 3 converge. The upgrade includes extending 2 of its 4 tracks, expanding the vestibule, and reconfiguring accesses and connections between levels. The Llobregat-Anoia line extension will link the FGC Vallès and Baix Llobregat-Anoia lines, leading to improved service and a reduction of transit time by an average of 4.5 minutes due to the elimination of train changes. Additionally, the project will facilitate interconnections, as the new stations will offer links to Barcelona Metro line 5, the light rail system, and other FGC lines.
