The Flemish Government has announced a EUR 3.2-billion investment programme in school infrastructure to finance the construction of new schools and the renovation of existing school buildings.
Annual funding for school infrastructure will increase from €571 million this year to €750 million per year by 2029. Overall, €3.2 billion will be invested in renovating existing school facilities and building new schools, marking the largest investment in school infrastructure to date. Beyond new construction, the programme also focuses on upgrading older buildings, improving accessibility, and modernising infrastructure to ensure it meets today’s educational requirements.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts under Education Minister Zuhal Demir to modernize the system, including reducing referrals to separate special schools and enhancing support models like integrated education (GON) and individual support (ION). It builds on ongoing policies promoting inclusion, such as updated attainment targets for special primary education approved in 2025. Benefits include improved social cohesion, better preparation for mainstream integration, and efficient use of infrastructure. Challenges may involve adaptation for teachers, funding allocation, and ensuring specialized care isn't diluted. This reform reflects Flanders' commitment to equitable education, in line with European trends toward inclusion, while preserving options for intensive support.
