Gilbane, in a joint venture with Turner Construction, has completed the US$2.1 billion Highmark Stadium for the Buffalo Bills in Orchard Park, New York, USA.
The landmark public-private partnership represents the largest construction project ever undertaken in Western New York, delivering an open-air stadium that will serve as the Buffalo Bills' home for at least the next three decades. Covering approximately 1.6 million square feet across a 242-acre site, the venue is scheduled to welcome the public for the first time on August 8, when the Bills host their inaugural Blue & Red nighttime scrimmage. Rising 116 feet above ground level—almost twice the height of the former stadium—the new Highmark Stadium offers panoramic views of Lake Erie, downtown Buffalo, and the Boston Hills. Designed to endure Western New York's harsh winter conditions while enhancing spectator comfort, the open-air venue accommodates 60,108 seated fans, with additional standing-room capacity. Its standout features include a 360-degree engineered canopy that covers approximately 64% of the seating bowl, reducing wind exposure and minimizing swirling winds across the playing field. The stadium also incorporates advanced heating technologies, including heated concourses, radiant heating in selected seating areas, and the world's largest stadium roof snow-melt system, which uses automated sensors to detect and melt snow accumulation. The stadium features a premium Kentucky bluegrass playing surface supplied by Tuckahoe Turf Farms, designed to maintain exceptional playing conditions throughout the year. The field is equipped with underground heating coils to prevent freezing, as well as advanced sub-air ventilation, sub-air technology, and grow-light systems that promote healthy turf growth in all seasons. Enhancing the fan experience, the venue also includes two large video scoreboards integrated with a high-performance, industry-leading sound system that delivers superior audio quality.
