Hitachi Ltd., the North East Combined Authority (NECA), and the Port of Tyne signed two international memoranda of understanding in Tokyo. Under the first MoU, Hitachi will support the region’s ambition to convert the local bus fleet in the North East to zero-emission vehicles within a decade, leveraging its expertise in advanced charging solutions and exploring AI-driven monitoring of transport infrastructure.
The second MoU focuses on developing what is termed a “Smart Port of the Future” at the Port of Tyne: assessing the potential for onsite production and deployment of clean e-fuels, enhancing digital and clean-energy infrastructure, and building skills in the regional workforce. Together, these agreements are expected to drive regional decarbonisation of transport and logistics and generate up to 200 new green jobs in the North East.
