The president of Nigeria has inaugurated the Lekki Deep Sea Port operation in Lagos, Nigeria on January 24, 2023.

The first phase of this port was completed in November 2022 at a cost of around US$1.5 billion. It included an 8 km-long navigation channel, a 600 m turning basin, a 19 m draught, as well as a breakwater and berths. The container terminal consists of three berths at a nearly 1.2 km quay and a container storage yard with more than 15,000 slots. The container port has the capacity to handle an annual throughput of 2.7 million TEUs twenty-foot equivalent containers. 

The project is developed by a joint venture between the federal government, through the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Lagos State Government, Tolarams Group (owners of the Lagos Free Zone), and China Harbour Engineering Company. The government is planning for the construction of five more deep-sea ports.
