Japanese contractor, Toyo Construction Company has handed over the completed phase 2 of the Second Container Terminal at the Port of Mombasa to the Kenya Ports Authority.

The Port of Mombasa, currently boasting a total annual capacity of 2.1 million TEUs, has now undergone official expansion, adding an extra annual capacity of 450,000 TEUs. The expansion initiative encompassed the creation of a 300-m-long berth identified as berth number 22, in addition to constructing other administrative facilities. The contractual obligations for this terminal's construction also encompassed the provision of essential Cargo Handling equipment, specifically four Ship to Shore Gantry (SSG) cranes and 12 Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes. In the context of this equipment, the initial phase of the project saw the delivery and commissioning of 1 SSG and 12 RTGs. According to the Japan Port consultant, the second phase of the project was executed on a reclaimed landmass spanning around 17.5 ha, and its completion was achieved through a division into 3 distinct packages.

  • The initial package, referred to as Package 1, encompassed the construction of foundational structures and edifices. This entailed the establishment of a 300-meter berth capable of accommodating both Panamax and post-panamax vessels, the creation of a container terminal expanding the capacity by an extra 500,000 TEUs, the erection of terminal buildings for the port, and the incorporation of the Kipevu Clinic.
  • The subsequent package, Package 2, involved the procurement of essential equipment. Specifically, this phase centered around the acquisition of four Ship to Shore (STS) Gantry cranes and 12 Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs).
  • The final package, Package 3, focused on the deployment of an integrated Port and Terminal Security system. This component was geared towards enhancing security measures for the port and terminal facilities.
