PROINVERSIÓN, under Peru’s Ministry of Economy and Finance, has completed the pre-investment studies for the New Chinecas Irrigation Project, enabling the declaration of project viability and the selection of an investment mechanism. The initiative, titled “Improvement and Expansion of the Chinecas Irrigation System” in the provinces of Santa, Casma, and Huarmey, will sustainably harness the Santa River’s flow while respecting existing water rights, upgrading irrigation for 51,000 existing hectares and adding 70,000 new ones to reach 121,000 hectares under modern, technified systems. 

Through collaborative efforts, premier international consulting firms were engaged: the Peruvian-German consortium LSH Consulting Engineers – Agua y Energía y Minería Ingenieros Consultores, tasked with conducting the studies, and the Peruvian-French consortium HC & Asociados – BRLi Ingenierie, responsible for overseeing them.

This milestone is expected to generate over 160,000 direct jobs, boost agricultural and agro-industrial output worth US$2.5 billion, position Áncash as a major northern agro-export hub, and improve water access and quality of life for local populations. The high-quality studies, conducted since a 2023 agreement by top-tier international consortia using advanced LIDAR topography and hydraulic modeling, underscore effective collaboration between regional and national entities, marking a key step in Peru’s agricultural expansion, water infrastructure modernization, and sustainable regional development.
